Body Image Isn’t Really About Your Body

We’ve all experienced it. One day, you catch your reflection in a shop window and barely think twice about it. You throw on your clothes, get on with your day, and feel perfectly comfortable in your own skin. Then a few days later, nothing has really changed, but suddenly everything feels different. You don’t like how your clothes fit. You avoid mirrors. You scrutinise photos. You find yourself wondering whether you’ve gained weight overnight.

So what happened?

The surprising truth is that body image isn’t really about your body. At least, not as much as we think.

Why Body Confidence Fluctuates

Many of us assume that body confidence is determined by how we look. If that were true, we’d feel exactly the same about our bodies every day. But we don’t. Research suggests that body image is influenced by a whole range of psychological, emotional, and physical factors. The way we feel about our bodies can shift dramatically even when our bodies haven’t changed at all. In other words, body image is often more about perception than reality. Let’s look at the underlying causes:

A great approach to tackling this is to ask yourself….”What else is going on right now?” Are you stressed, tired, overwhelmed, feeling the hit of hormones, or have you been scrolling socials and comparing yourself to others?

What Can We Do?

The goal isn’t to love every part of your appearance every moment of every day, but instead, aim for something more sustainable: body neutrality. Recognise that your body is not a daily performance review and it doesn’t need to earn your approval before you can enjoy your life. Continue pursuing your health goals if they’re important to you, but remember that how you feel about your body on any given day is often influenced by factors that have very little to do with how your body actually looks.
