Looking Out for the Men in Your Life
While our community is mostly made up of women, we know many of you are supporting partners, brothers, fathers, sons, or close friends in their health journeys. And let’s be honest: men are often far less proactive when it comes to looking after themselves. They’ll tough things out, delay appointments, ignore symptoms, and sometimes avoid conversations altogether. But that doesn’t mean we can’t help shift the tide.
This week, we’re shining a light on the common health conditions men face and what you can do to support them.
As they age, men become more vulnerable to conditions that are often silent in the early stages. These include:
Cardiovascular disease (the #1 killer in men, often without early warning signs)
High blood pressure and cholesterol
Type 2 diabetes (frequently undiagnosed until later stages)
Prostate health issues (including benign enlargement and prostate cancer)
Mental health struggles, especially depression and anxiety, which men are less likely to talk about or seek help for
Testosterone decline, which can affect energy, mood, libido, and body composition
How You Can Make a Difference
You’re already someone who values wellness, so your influence is powerful. Often, it’s the conversations you initiate, the meals you cook, the walks you suggest, or the appointments you nudge them to book that can make all the difference. If a man in your life hasn’t had a check-up in years, you might be the only person who encourages him to go.
A few supportive nudges:
Start small: Invite him to join you for a morning walk or try a new healthy recipe together.
Ask gently, listen fully: If something seems off-low energy, stress, irritability, ask how he’s feeling, not just how he’s doing.
Encourage check-ups: A routine blood panel and blood pressure check can catch things early and literally save lives.
Model openness: Talk about your own health habits and challenges. It makes it easier for them to do the same.
If You’re a Man Reading This
First, well done for being here. You’re already ahead of the curve. Don’t underestimate the impact that small daily choices and timely check-ins can have on your long-term wellbeing. Your health is worth the effort. Not just for you, but for the people who love you.
