As most of you know, I enjoy cooking and trying new healthy recipes!

I love this time of year; routines, structure, change in the weather, creating some new habits and getting back to meal prep. If you had a carefree summer and are ready to get back into routine, then take a look at 5 things I think will help you stay the course this fall!

My mom always had her go-to recipes. I knew that every Sunday at lunch would be tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches, and at some point during the week, we’d have hamburger and macaroni bake! Sound familiar? I have my go-to’s as well. These are the dinners that you don’t need a recipe for and are easy for you to throw together. The fall is a great time to step back into thinking and preparing ahead, and perhaps adding some NEW healthy recipes to the rotation.

Here are some tips to ensure you have delicious, healthy meals on the table every night:

1. Pick a day on the weekend to prep your meals – If you make this a habit, you will find that eventually, you won’t even have to think about this, it will just be part of your weekend and prepping for the week ahead.

2. Make a list of what you want to prepare – This is when you can start looking for some new healthy recipes, maybe begin with trying one per week. Pinterest of course is loaded with healthy options. I often pin Paleo dinner recipes as I find that they are lower carb, and high protein.

3. Ensure you have all the ingredients – Make your list and go shopping. Don’t forget to check out your local farmer’s market to get some great local in season produce.

4. Macronutrients and micronutrients – Planning out your meals will help ensure you have the right amount of macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, fat) and micronutrients (phytochemicals, vitamins, mineral) which are essential and will give you a balanced meal.

5. Cook in bulk – When prepping meals such as soups, make a big batch and freeze some. Some things like potatoes don’t freeze well, so be sure to check the recipe first.

If meal planning is new for you, start with a couple of meals and add to this weekly. Pick easy recipes and do not overwhelm yourself as small steps are critical in creating a habit.

Once you start this, you will notice less food waste, and you will spend less money and less time at the grocery store.
