The holidays are just around the corner and with it… lots of delicious treats! I’m all for shortbread in moderation, but there are also a lot of ways that you can make your favorite treats a lot healthier too.

As my members know, one of my goals this year is to improve my gut health. One of the most recent podcasts I listened to on Using Your Nervous System to Enhance Your Immune System talked about the importance of improving your mucus barrier by enhancing your microbiome. If you want to stave off the cold and flu season, improving your gut health is a great place to start. There are many ways to improve your gut health, and the foods that you eat play a very important role. Real cacao powder, (not cocoa powder that has been through a heating process) like the stuff I use in this recipe, is packed with flavonoids, helping your body regulate cellular activity and fight off free radicals.

Plus, this just tastes delicious. Top with a little homemade coconut whip cream and you’re walking in a winter wonderland!

Aztec Hot Chocolate

This recipe is adapted from The Good Gut

Ingredients

  • 2 cups unsweetened almond milk
  • 1/4 cup organic cacao powder
  • 1 tsp molasses
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract or peppermint
  • 1 tsp Ceylon cinnamon
  • Pinch sea salt
  • Pinch cayenne pepper (optional)

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients in a small saucepan over medium heat. Whisk gently until all of the cacao powder is incorporated. Be sure not to scald the milk. Serve hot and top with a homemade coconut whip cream and chocolate shavings or additional cinnamon. Or, make it a mocha by adding a shot of espresso!
